I'd have to say that 10% of the world population, including most animal species, being gay is big enough numbers to make it "normal". Normal enough anyway. That would mean that if there were 6.5 billion people in the world that 650 million are gay or lesbian. A little over twice the entire US population or pretty close (150 mill short of if you include Central America) to the entire population of North and South America. If we rounded up all the gay people in the world they could replace just about everyone on two whole continents.

Easy answer: gay people can't get married because it is against the law.
Easy summary: 1. I believe that homosexuality is a sin. 2. I believe that homosexuality is wrong. 3. I believe that homosexuality is a choice. 4. I believe that a marriage based on sin is wrong. 5. I DON'T believe that all homosexuals are going to hell. 6. I DON'T believe that all homosexuals would make bad parents. 7. I DON'T believe that homosexuals are inferior to anyone else. These are some of my personal beliefs. They can neither be supported nor refuted by statistics alone. Phoenix, is 10% of the world's population really gay? |

Hence why people are trying to CHANGE said law.
And whether or not you believe it is a sin, the fact remains that there is a separation of Church and State, and the CHURCH has no business deciding the legal impact of gay marriage in the United States, particularly considering that by the very freedoms this Country was founded on, people are not required to worship under any particular religion or any religion at all for that matter. If people are going to be treated fairly and equally then they need to be so, and when it comes down to it, love is love. What IS so frightening about love? |

Re: Oh No! Controversy!

This may have come up, as I didn't read the entire thread...
My original view was: Marriage is for a man and a woman. Marriage was, essentially, born out of religion - or at the very least, has serious ties to religion. Said religion is christianity in America. But I have no longer have a problem with it. Not allowing gays to marry is just racism flying under a different flag. Nor is "civil union" acceptable, as it would be separate but equal to marriage, and that's segregation. By allowing gays to marry, it does not imply that the country has come to a consensus that it is "wrong" or "right" in moral terms. Morality lies in the individuals. Just because your beliefs/religion say that homosexuality is wrong does not mean you are somehow harmed by the fact that gays can marry. Laws are created to protect our rights, freedom, and safety. No one is harmed, no rights are abridged, and no one is oppressed by allowing gays to marry. As there is no physical or personal damage created by allowing gays to marry, law has no right to intervene. |

How is race = sexual preference?
Am I the only person who believes that sexual preference is a preference? Race isn't a preference - I'm stuck with the one I'm born with and regardless of my actions, I cannot change that fact. Ra' - I want to personally and publically apologize to you if my conservatives views are offensive to you. My intent isn't to offend, I'm trying to debate an issue on an internet message board... If I were to meet you in real life, I'd shake your hand, buy you a drink, and probably contine continue our debate. Just because I disagree with someone doesn't mean that I intend to disrespect them. If I have disrespected you in any way, I seriously apologize. |

I'm gonna play Devil's Advocate here...even though its really late in the game.
Eli writes: Am I the only person who believes that sexual preference is a preference? Race isn't a preference - I'm stuck with the one I'm born with and regardless of my actions, I cannot change that fact. If were basing our opinions on BELIEF, then there is no foul in crossing into the hypothetical: What if that same logic applies to your sexuality? What if you're 'stuck' there too? I didnt wake up one day and just DECIDE I love water buffalo, I've ALWAYS been this way. We needed the levity! *goes back to serious mode* Rad's you can clarify, and I am not trying to psycho-analyze you. Have you ALWAYS FELT this way about men or was it something you consciously DECIDED? I had 12 years of rigid Catholic school upringing, but I would never make a presumption like that based on the teaching od a book authored two thousand years ago...most of it based on INTERPRETATIONS of what God proclaims. We all see where any persons interpretation can be flawed, but lets not get into that. Thats the next Controversey Thread! >=E What if race isnt the only baggage you are "born" with? Religion needs to back off on this one. If Christians and Catholics and Satanist wanna all sit in a forum and discuss the evils of the Sodomites.... ...you have church. Go discuss. The Capitol is NOT a church. If you are hardpressing a denominational BELIEF on a tax-paying ATHIEST or AGNOSTIC...you, my friend are in the wrong. Live and let live. Stop worrying about the potential ruined minds and skewered family values that will result from this. Worry about YOUR family where YOUR beliefs are pertinent. Besides, as I see it gay marriage will be hard pressed to top most of the other weird @#%$ we have going on in the world these days. Wait till I start stampeding my ho's thru the Vatican! >=E FUCTARDISCLAIMER: I used the gender applicative "you" many times. I was not inferring that this post was solely directed at Eli personally. I'm speaking in general. |

Re: Oh No! Controversy!

I do not want to write about homosexual marriage, even though the topic started on this subject. The issue is not homosexuality or homosexual marriage. If you want specific points of view on homosexuality check the verses at the end of this essay.
So if the issue is not homosexuality what is the issue? As anyone who read the Givens in an earlier post my point of view is that sin is the issue. Quote: What is sin? In its simplest form sin is Quote: The context of chapter 4 is submitting to God (v. 7-8, Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.) Within the context the good [one] ought to do is to do good through submitting to God through the means described in vs. 7-10. At the same time one needs to understand that the ability to submit and flee is not something one can do on his/her own. One cannot do this because there is nothing perfect within a person that allows him/her to submit and flee. There is an inherent ill will toward good. Only rules and laws create order. Remove laws and rules and society will in fact crumble because of societies nature. Quote: In the Galatians verse I see the comment that the whole world is a prisoner of sin. What exactly does this mean? It means that everything in the world is corrupted by mankinds sin. The world is cursed by God in Genesis 3:14-19 because of Adam and Eves disobedience You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die. (Genesis 2:16-17). Death in this verse touches on two themes in scripture (a) physical death and (b) spiritual death. Another evidence of the whole world being a prisoner of sin can be found in Quote: The context refers to a New Heaven and New Earth that will occur when (if youve seen the Passion will provide additional frame of reference) Jesus returns. Once again all will be perfect as it was in the Garden. Quote: Death was not a product of Gods creation. There were no carnivores because death would be the result. Creation was not meant to die. This is why the New heaven and earth will allow what are currently carnivores and herbivores to lay down next to each other. Though scripture does not specifically say this, I believe that God has the power and used his power to curse the world in a way that turned everything upside down. Animals killed and ate other animals for example. I imagine massive earthquake and volcanic activity ripping the planet apart. If I believe that God created out of nothing by his love, then I can easily believe Gods righteous wrath ripping the earth to pieces in his judgment. The curse is only the first instance of Gods wrath. There is also the flood and the ultimate destruction of all that is as detailed in the book of Revelation. What is the bottom line? The bottom line is that everyone is a sinner. It is not an issue of the acts of the sinning. Sin reaches deep into the very soil of the earth and into every pore of the human body, mind, and heart. This is something mankind chooses. Quote: So where is the hope? Quote: Context is Jesus Christ on the cross. The blood of Christ is a substitute for the penalty we should all pay for our sins. Christ took it upon himself on our behalf out of his love for us. John 3:16 is an oft over used verse seen at every athletic event but the fact it is oft used does not negate its truth. Jesus is saying this, For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. The perishing in this verse refers back to the two forms of death (a) physical and (b) spiritual. To many this is utter foolishness and scripture speaks on this as well. Quote: Quote: The issue with Jesus and Sin needs to be addressed by each person. Is Jesus who he claimed to be? Is he a lunatic or a liar? Someone who speaks with such authority demands the audience to decide, but the decision does not replace the facts. Quote: Quote: This is a hard hard thing to comprehend and believe. Believing goes against the sinful nature and the "wisdom" of the sinful nature. But one should not think this is easy for a Christian. Any real Christian struggles with the sin nature and the forgiven soul every single day of his/her life. It is a struggle not to speed on the highway (but this essay is not about little sins). At the same time, the Christian should not live in fear. Living in fear negates Jesus' sacrifice. Quote: This refers to the Word of God which is the scripture. Anyone reading this needs to understand (or not understand as the case may be) that I am writing in faith that the Word of God is the perfect testimony of His will to man and that he has chosen to use the repentant sinful man to accomplish his work of salvation, teaching and testimony. To this end he gave to men the Holy Spirit to lead them through the writing of scripture as well as the determination of what should and should not be included as scripture. But, I am not perfect and my views may not be correct. Even though I sign off on them and believe that this is an accurate doctrinal view of scripture and sin the Bible is clear Quote: Sotest, read for yourselves and look at things with an open heart. A closed heart determined to remain in its hardened state and with a refusal to search for truth will not find it. Quote: Is homosexuality a sin? Is pornography a sin? Is murder a sin? Is lying a sin? Is adultery a sin? Is speeding above the speed limit a sin? Is giving someone a mental middle finger a sin? Is beating ones children a sin? Is continuing to do anything that is a sin a sin? What does a person who is a Christian do about these 'temptations'? No doubt it is a struggle. One persons temptation is another persons vice and one persons vice is another persons temptation. God works with each of his believers in an individual way to bring out of that person the greatest acts of worship. The way God works in the life of a Christian is not a "one size fits all approach", even if the only way to become a Christian is a "one death, and resurrection, for all" approach. There is no doubt that the Holy Spirit will give help to a person who struggles. This is why the Holy Spirit is so often referred to as "The Helper". On the other hand there is no doubt that a person with an unbelieving heart will continue sinning in defiance of God's commands. Even a Christian will ignore the Holy Spirit throughout his/her life and sin over and over and over again. A Christian may spend a lifetime in a battle over a personal sin....but it should be a battle and not a surrender. Is this all foolishness? It is a matter of faith and truth. The earth is round. There is no question the earth is round. The earth has been round and forever will be round. The fact that the historical church had faith the earth was flat did not change the fact that the earth was round. Likewise, Jesus is stating some amazing things. He is claiming to be God, the same God who created the world and issued the Commandments, died on the cross and will one day return to judge all mankind. Are these facts? In faith I say "yes". Ignoring it may bring comfort in this life. Testing it and making an informed decision based on an open heart and mind could bring comfort in the afterlife. I'm not God so I cannot claim a stake over could or would. In Conclusion: Is there a point in debating this essay? Yes. Debate away. I'll comment where I can but will always come back to the same verse used earlier... Elijah, I don't feel disrespected in the least. :) Likewise, if my dismissive comments on religion have indicated a lack of respect for you, I apologize as well. I tend to underscore some points with sarcasm -- I'm a huge fan of English humor. ;)
But seriously, while I may shake my fist at my monitor a couple of times, in no way do I think I've gotten the full Elijah from posts here on a message board. It may be a window into some of your mind, but I make no mistake believing that this is the most conducive forum for discussion. After all, there are no facial features or body language to gauge what is being written by. :) So no worries. I've only been offended once in recent years... and that was when I took a business trip with a co-worker to Atlanta, Georgia... I'll just say the people I met down there were the nicest people I've met. We were staying at the Hyatt or Hilton downtown, and there was this very kind, nice man who greeted us every time we walked into the hotel from our meetings in the hotel across the street. As the first set of sliding doors closed behind us, and the ones in front of us hadn't opened yet, my co-worker said, "That's right, do your job like you're supposed to." Yes, you guessed it, the kind man out front was black. I just stopped, turned, and looked at my co-worker, my jaw probably pretty close to the floor. I was completely and totally speechless -- this man had been nothing but kind and friendly, and this @#%$ decides to say something like that because he was black. THAT offended me. This... this is just a conversation. :) |

Well, I agree in principle with Elijah.
Humans are born with all sorts of tendencies. Some people are born with a genetic tendency for Alcoholism, or so they say. These people, while they are more tempted by alcohol, must still choose to drink. Virtually everyone born has a desire and tendency for premarital sex, yet everyone born must still choose to practice premarital sex. Some people get a thrill from stealing things from other people. They're drawn to it, but they still choose to do it. Some people may be born with a tendency to practice homosexuality.. or beastiality for that matter. Is homosexuality normal? Sure. It's as normal as alcoholism, at least. It's as normal as premarital sex, et al. An Alcoholic can choose not to drink, and a Homosexual person can choose not to practice homosexuality. The difference in opinion here really has nothing to do with normalcy at all. One group believes that homosexuality is inappropriate behavior, the other group sees nothing wrong with it. |

The interesting thing about message boards such as this one is the diverse nature of the people who read it.
I'm not sure about each of you but I tend to be drawn to those I'm similar to... not always, but mostly. It's less than likely that I'd find a diverse crowd to converse with in my natural course of doing business or living my life... here is where I enjoy discussing topics with those who disagree with me. It's much harder to find such a diverse group out in the "real world." I basically look at life as a long set of choices... from the time we are able to use our free will and fend for ourselves, we make choices that ultimately put us where we are. The decisions we make and the paths we choose... those are what I like to look upon and examine. There are so many unique people and sets of choices out there... but each of us have to decide the difference between right and wrong and face the consequences of our decisions. One very great thing about our governmental system is that our choices influence the laws (other than when courts decide to do it - which is a whole separate conversation). We're able to use days like today to vote... choose representatives who are, in essence, our voices in this process. Ultimately, they are the ones who decide what is right and wrong in the lawmaking process... I hope each of you out there who had the opportunity to vote today grabbed at it and made your choice on topics such as the one we've been discussing :). |

Yes, Eli. Early studies showed it to be at 1-2%, but they were, by the 1920s or 30s I think, shown to be poorly conducted (bad statistical choices and poor anonymity conditions). Most tests conducted since then show the number to be in the 9-15% range, though the average I believe is around 10%.
So yes, if you are sitting in a room with 20 people odds are 2 of them will be gay or lesbian. |

Elijah the Warrior |
Re: Oh No! Controversy!

I honestly had no idea the numbers were that high... How do you guestimate such a number? With large numbers of homosexuals *reluctant* to admit to anyone they're gay due to the social isses surrounding it, I would think that number would be very difficult to pin down.
|
|||
RaDian FlGith |
Re: Oh No! Controversy!
|
Well, that's certainly the point of controversy. You have to figure that the people who are counted as the average 10% are the ones who are open about it -- this does, of course, mean that there could be many more who are not open about it. I wouldn't go over 20% myself, thinking more around 15%, but there's absolutely no particular way to tell. Still, it is a significant number.
Now, about the matter of whether sexuality is a choice or something people are born with... to be honest, I'm of the belief it's a choice, though even I would be stupid to discount a genetic predisposition considering that, as I said, at a very young age, I was trying to fit Bo and Luke Duke together. I had to have been about six at the time in further recollection. And there was something about them that caught an interest in me... of course, I had no idea what at the time really. Still, I have been with a couple of "straight" guys who were "curious," and while they continued to be straight, while we were "together," you would have thought otherwise. So maybe it's a bit of both. Or maybe some people are more comfortable with feelings. Or maybe some people have curiosities that others don't. It's hard to say all around. After all, there is no easy way to categorize anyone, and nothing in the world is black and white. |
|||
Elijah the Warrior |
Re: Oh No! Controversy!

I think that "black and white" issue is where I tend to get criticized... although I agree that there are grey areas, I typically make decisions on either the black or white end of the scale. I suppose at it's core, that's partially why I disagree with the subject of this thread :).
I look at a subject... look at the black and white ends of the spectrum... and then choose a side based on what I believe to be right. Not sure if there's a psychological or sociological term for someone like me who tends to be on the extreme ends of the spectrum... |

Re: Oh No! Controversy!

Its true, odds are that number may be higher. When doing a scientific study based on people you have to make allowances and try to account for people not answering truthfully or just answering stupidly. Some of the drawbacks to those who wouldn't normally admit it are lessened by anonymous polls, but then you still have to worry about people answering stupidly. And then you have to take into account people who are gay but in denial about it.
But overall, its better to be less on the numbers than more. Heh, looks better later on if you go with a lower, yet pretty good sized, number than it really is when someone can do a more accurate study with more truthful and open participants. Oh yeah, you also have to choose your survey population well too to ensure that its a good general model for the populace. If you go doing a survey trying to see how many people in society overall are gay at a gay pride parade and you announce your findings to be that 95% of the population is gay, people will laugh you out. I forget which newspaper it was that did it, but they, through polling, announced who the next President would be with all certainty a day early back in the early 1900s (maybe upwards of 20s or 30s). The day of the official results came and the president they said had won didn't win, in fact the one who did win won by a landslide. What the pollsters did was use a telephone to call everyone they could that had one, which was a pretty easy feat in those days, maybe a few thousand people. Almost everyone they talked to said the President who didn't win would win, so they announced he would. Their problem was that at the time only the more affluent people had telephones, and the pollsters were talking to only one political party instead of both, if they had done door to door polling they would have found that the vast majority of the people would have voted the otherway. Well, long story short, the announcement destroyed their credibility and they went out of business. Oh, and that would be psychological since its just dealing with the individual personality. And if you don't want a serious answer, I believe the term would be Extremist. hehehehe. |

Well, without having to type a 5 paragraph response, I agree with Ra and people should butt out of others business.
When I started my job with the cable company I was told that me and my significant other could not have insurance because we aren't married...however a friend of mine who is homosexual has insurance for herself and her girlfriend. I'm told that the reason is...I have the option to marry and they don't. Welp, that pissed me off and it's not fair to me at all, I have to get married to get insurance for someone I've been with for 6 yrs ? Lame. As for the religious portion of this..I'm Pagan and I've had my share of what's "not right" and what is. Paganism is an old old religion...ok,not even going to go there. :) This country was built on the beliefs of Christanity and unfortunately if you believe anything other than what christians believe you suffer. Gays marrying will not effect day to day life folks...and it will be legal eventually. Ra..NEVER get married...it's over rated and expensive. ~ Lady Lust ~ |
