Us midwesterners might dern near learn hockey someday, too... now that the CBJ have come to town. Too bad they suck...
Although we have a new AFL team, too... the Destroyers. I was never into AFL too much until they came to town. Now I tend to watch every Sunday... it's like a mix of football and hockey. Fun stuff indeedy. |

Bertuzzi - gone for the year. It'll cost him more than half a million $$, too. A just penalty, in my opinion. They should have to give a portion of that to the rookie who's career might be over. If the kid never plays again, they should give a portion of Bertuzzi's salary to him for the rest of Bertuzzi's career, too.
Question - why did the NHL fine the Canucks $250k? How could they have been at fault for the cheap shot? |

I agree with you on the $250k fine.
I can only surmise that it is the NHLs way of conveying to its players that icetime and inner-team discipline will supplement those consequences handed down by the league. My guess...its nuclear deterrance to other players, as ownership ALSO gets hit when they pull stunts like that. I really love the idea you have on a garnished salary for him. The hockey league I play in has a great system for suspensions. Say Nero played hockey (wetbacks prefer cactus-hopping...but I ask you to suspend disbelief for this) and I took a run at him. I cross check him into the boards soooo bad I fracture his uterus in 3 places, and he will miss 5 weeks of hockey. If the officials deem it was intent, I cannot return until he recovers from his injury. Now granted, I dont get paid to play hockey like Todd Bertuzzi, but I *pay to play* When you shell out close to $500 a season + all the lil extras like seasonal equipment maintenance and what not...its a damn good deterrent. |

Tene - that sounds like your league has a nice idea there.
Today's pro athletes tend to be paid so much that a one-time fine - even if it's huge - is still not a deterrent. On top of that, their teams tend to pay them so much that they want them on the ice/field as much as possible to help them win, keep an audience, gain more sponsors, etc... since that's the case, you don't get many "internal" team suspensions or the like. For intentional cheap shots and such, I think the idea of having their fine be carried out over the duration of the injury is a good one. As far as I'm concerned, if you put someone in a wheelchair or such, you should pay them for life. Of course there's a fine line between intentional and a natural part of the game... |
